Country : Nepal

Description:

Mission Himalaya was founded in July 2008 by a group of socially committed professionals to help rural and back tracked Nepalese communities. Not only have they committed to reaching out to those in need of proper healthcare and education, but are also dedicated to helping orphaned and homeless children.

Nepal has as many as 80,000 orphans, all in need of a safe, secure home.

Our primary project has been:

The Children's Eco Home & Farm - A self-sustaining eco-friendly home for orphans based in Kavre, Panauti. Mission Himalaya provide proper care and nurturing to children who have been abandoned or orphaned.

Gulf for Good have been working with Mission Himalaya since 2009, when funds were first donated by the English College Dubai to secure 1,930 square meters of land near Panauti for the Children’s Home & Eco Farm. The land was purchased in early 2010.

Gulf for Good has since funded the following, through various G4G Challenges:

2009 Annapurna Circuit Trek

This challenge raised AED177,015 for Mission Himalaya. These funds were used for the first stages of building the Mission Himalaya Children’s Home & Eco Farm. This work began mid-2010 to October 2011 by laying out the access road and boundary wall, then putting in latrines, showers, the guardhouse, and the first level of the main house, including 2 large bedrooms, kitchen/dining, plumbing, electrics and wastewater facilities.

In 2011, Mission Himalaya was also working closely with the village elders to identify the most vulnerable children for the project. At this time, there were up to 100 orphans in the vicinity of the Children’s Home who needed care.

2011 Everest Base Camp Challenge

This challenge raised AED256,289 and supported the completion of the main and ancillary buildings.

September 2012: The first children moved in!

November 2012: Construction on the main building is complete and operational! At this time, there were sixteen orphans (including siblings) and the ‘House Mother” Mrs. Koirala, who cares for the orphans. The organic vegetable and fruit garden was also implemented then, and continues to this day.

A full construction field report was undertaken by a G4G volunteer in 2012 who kindly took a whole day out of his holiday to visit the site and complete a full survey.   If you would like to read his field report, click here to download a copy

2015 Everest Base Camp Challenge

This challenge raised AED108,017. The participants sadly did not visit the Children’s Home due to the April 2015 earthquake, which cut the challenge short. However, the wonderful efforts of this group funded a much needed Multipurpose Vehicle for transporting the children to school, study tours as well as for emergencies and medical / dental check ups and daily activities.

2016 Bhutan Challenge

This challenge raised AED158,976. These funds were used to  insulate the Home's internal walls and add extra layers of glass to the huge windows of the building, helping to keep the kids protected from the bitter cold of the winter season. During Nepal’s winter, the temperature averages an icy 9 degrees, often dropping to below zero at night.

2017 Annapurna Base Camp Challenge

This challenge raised AED92,426, ticking off many essential items on the Mission Himalaya wish list:

  • A chicken coup and chickens!
  • Additional solar panels to help heat the water to ensure the kids are getting hot showers in the cold winter months
  • Furniture for the dining area and bedrooms in preparation for the 5 extra children joining the home in September
  • A sports area/basketball court and additional sports and play equipment
  • A power till to till the land for cultivation
  • CCTV to be installed for extra security

2018 Land of the Thunder Dragon Challenge

This challenge raised AED77,278 funding the following:

  • A washroom on the upper floor
  • Steel Lockers
  • Basketball court fencing/roofing
  • Table Tennis roofing
  • Greenhouse
  •  Proper draining and soak pit

Further Information:

The project has been visited by G4G challengers in 2009, 2011, 2016, 2017, and 2018.

Funding has been given in installments against project updates, including photos and receipts.

We are proud of this long standing and successful partnership with Mission Himalaya to provide much needed shelter and care for currently 28 orphans.
