Description:

LATEST UPDATE - JANUARY 2012

We have received a comprehensive report from the Smile Foundation in India, which included the following case studies.   To receive a copy of the full report, please email

Case study - 1

Ram Pyari belongs to a lower class family, there are 12 members in the family and they depend on a daily wage. When the Smile on Wheels team reached Nagla for OPD, the beneficiary had been suffering from fever, headache, body pain for the last 10 days and was also suffering from loose motion, vomiting, and had gastric abdominal pain. He was not able to go to work, so the family had no income. The Smile on Wheels team visited Nagla 4 times in one month, with full investigation, treatment and follow-up.  Now Ram Pyari is in very good health.

A quote from the beneficiary: “Bagwan apka bhala Kare Humka Bhut Aram Mila”   which translates as "God bless you, my pain has been eased".

Case study - 2

This is the story of an 18 year old girl, Lakha, who lives in Delhi, Motia Khan, and her husband is a Richshaw puller.  They are very poor and live in overcrowded halls and are exposed to very unhygienic conditions.  On 5th May 2011, she had labour pains and the community volunteers informed the Smile On Wheels team in St.Stephen Hospital.  The team visited Motia Khan and the baby was delivered by our doctor at home, as it was not possible to shift her to hospital.  Then, postnatal  visits were done by our staff during our regular visits to that location four times each month. The baby has also been given all the required vaccinations.

"We are highly obliged to Gulf for Good for their support to bring this service and a 'Smile' to the needy people."   Smile Foundation 2011

UPDATE - October 2011

Work on the 3rd G4G-financed mobile hospital is underway.   The 2 previous G4G-funded SMILE mobile health vans are now fully operational in Delhi.    Once complete, the new van will be used in Mumbai.

UPDATE - June 2011

We have are now working with  Smile to procure equipment for a third mobile hospital unit for use in the slums of Mumbai.   To date we have donated $9,300 of the $18,600 for this third mobile unit.

UPDATE - February 2011

Smile currently operate 10 "Smile on Wheels" mobile units serving the under-priveledged population living in 217 slums/remote villages in India.   To date, we have donated US $55k for 2 of these units in Delhi, plus refurbishment of an Education and Vocational Training Centre in Dhaula Khan.

The remaining $20k will be used to buy medical equipment for a mobile medical van for Mumbai.

ORIGINAL INFORMATION - pre Feb 2011

Funds raised by participants in the Himalayan Panorama Adventure 2009 were donated to the Smile Foundation to renovate an education & vocational skill centre and provide a mobile hospital “Smile on Wheels” for the marginalized children of Delhi slums.

Another partner stepped forward to assist with funding mobile hospital vans.   This has resulted in Gulf for Good part funding a second mobile hospital.   This is great news, as it means more aid to more children - each one serving around 5,000 people.   Both mobile hospitals are now complete and in use.

Refurbishment of the Education Centre was originally delayed due to adverse weather conditions, but building work was completed in early 2010 and fittings were completed soon afterwards.

The remaining funds raised by the Himalayan Panorama Adventure 2009 will be used to buy medical equipment for a mobile medical van in Mumbai.
