Thomas Barnado House (TBH)

Country : Kenya

Description:

Thomas Barnado House (TBH) in Nairobi is a charitable organisation dedicated to the total care of orphaned, abandoned and destitute children.  It has been an independent Kenyan charity since 1971.   The charity’s goal is not just to remove a child from a life-threatening situation, but to build good Kenyans who are socially adjusted, well educated and ethically sound, and to equip them with “life skills”.

In 2003, the home cared for 122 children of ages newborn to 23 years, and provided for all their needs, including medical and dental care, counselling, education and/or vocational training.   TBH ran two schools, which were also open to the public – one a nursery school / daycare and the other a primary school to standard 8.  These helped to generate income for the home.

TBH planned to expand the primary school, with an immediate need for four classrooms with the ultimate goal of eight. 50% of the costs of this expansion work were pledged by the The Balcraig Foundation, Scotland; Gulf for Good supported the rest.
