UPDATE – July 2011
The challengers from the “WILDS OF BORNEO” challenge have just visited Don Bosco’s Children’s Home and sent us the photos above of what looks like a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding expereince on all sides.
Don Bosco is home to 72 children who all attend a school nearby. Most of the children have at least one parent alive. However, these parents are not capable of caring for their children due to drug addiction or poverty. Some of the children are orphans. The children stay in the home for most of the year and visit their parents during holidays. When asked, we were told that most often than not, children grow up, get jobs and come back to visit the home and bring gifts for the other children. Their most recent success story has been an orphan raised at Don Bosco who has just been accepted for Medical School – fantastic!
Sister Leonie informed us that most of the local families are very helpful and provide donations in forms of food, money, books, clothes, etc. The home spends approximately Aed 9k-10k each month on expenses on the children. They have been lucky so far, due to philanthropic organizations such as Gulf for Good, but Brother Benedict is always looking for donors to keep the home running without any hiccups.
The G4G challengers painted some of the exterior walls of the home. When the children came back from school, they enjoyed a few games of frisbee, football, etc. with the challengers. All ate lunch together, followed by some musical performances by the kids.
The funds collected by G4G will be used to buy 4 drinking water tanks for the children.
UPDATE – June 2011
Don Bosco Children’s Home has been operating since 1966 and today provides care for 80 children aged 6 to 19 years. Brother Benedict and Sister Leonie manage the home.
Gulf for Good’s Wilds of Borneo Challenge will donate monies for four 800-gallon water tanks to preserve rainwater. The challengers will visit the home while in Borneo in July 2011.
ORIGINAL INFORMATION
Challengers during the 2007 Borneo Challenge visited this children’s home and painted several areas to brighten the home up for the kids.
Gulf for Good funded construction of a storeroom at the children’s home as well as relocation of a water tank and subsequent construction of wash basins and drinking fountain, which much improved the quality of life for the children at the home.
