Mission Himalaya Children’s Eco Farm Home

Country : Nepal

Description:

LATEST UPDATE – October 2011

The group of challengers from the Everest Base Camp Challenge visited the orphanage on the last day of their challenge and found it shaping up to becoming a wonderful home for up to 45 vulnerable Nepalese children.

Work is done or nearing completion on the access road, boundary wall, toilets, guard house and first level of the main house, including 2 large bedrooms, kitchen/dining, plumbing, electrics and wastewater.   Additional funding will be used to furnish and expand the main house and assist with ancillary buildings.

There are up to 100 orphans in the vicinity of the new Children’s Farm Home and the home managers are working very closely with village elders to identify most vulnerable children

UPDATE – July 2011

Mission Himalaya have sent us artist’s drawings of the Eco Farm Home.    The building is currently being developed according to these drawings, but please note that the land area is almost 3 times the size shown on the drawings.      It is actually wider at the narrow end, which is where they plan to develop the organic vegetable garden.

Room for expansion:   The land area of the site is 64 annas, whilst the building is only approx 5 annas (
1 Anna = 342.42 sq feet).   Therefore, there is plenty of space for further expansion in the future!     In addition, the foundations and steel/concrete structure of the building is strong enough for a 5~6 storeyed building.   However, Mission Himalaya’s medium term target will be to go max 3~4 storeys, depending on how the Eco Home for kids grows.

UPDATE – June 2011

Funds raised from the 2011 Everest Base Camp Challenge will be donated to Mission Himalaya (http://www.missionhimalaya.org), a registered Nepalese charity established in 2008 to provide primary health care, education and nutrition to orphans and work for their welfare.

Mission Himalaya are currently building a new Eco Children’s Farm Home, a self sustaining farm and home  for up to 45 Nepalese orphans.   In early 2010, Mission Himalaya acquired 1,930 sq metres of land about 1 hour east of Katmandu, near the ancient township of Panauti.    Construction on the Eco Farm began about 5 months later with laying of the access road and boundary wall.    Work has since commenced on latrines, showers, the guardhouse and the main housing.

Funding raised from the G4G 2011 challenge will enable completion of the main building as well as construction of ancillary buildings.

The Farm was initially being constructed for the NYCDS orphanage.    Unfortunately, within the last month NYCDS have secured a new donor enabling them to sign a new lease for alternative accommodation in a nearby village.

Nepal has as many as 80,000 orphans, all in need of a safe, secure home.   Mission Himalaya are currently in discussions with alternative orphanages to identify the right partner to occupy the serene new Eco Farm.   We will send updates as these discussions progress.

UPDATE – February 2011

Unfortunately, unusually adverse weather conditions have driven up the project costs, so the charity’s project managers are looking at ways to reduce costs and the NYCDS are trying to raise additional funding.  To date, we have paid US $30k with another remaining $18k to be paid upon receipt of the revised plans. Gulf for Good have also committed to use funds raised from the 2011 Everest Base Camp Challenge for NYCDS.
